Song Analysis: Science and Faith – By The Script

Science and Faith by The Script

Tried to break love to a science
In an act of pure defiance
I broke her heart.
As i pulled apart her theories
As i watched her growing weary
I pulled her apart
Having heavy conversations
About the furthest constellations of our souls. oh
We’re just trying to find some meaning
In the things that we believe in
But we got some ways to go.
Of all of the things that she’s ever said
She goes and says something that just knocks me dead.

You won’t find faith or hope down a telescope
You won’t find heart and soul in the stars
You can break everything down to chemicals
But you can’t explain a love like ours.

Ooohhhh
It’s the way we feel, yeah this is real
Ooohhhh
It’s the way we feel, yeah this is real

I tried pushing evolution
As the obvious conclusion of the start.
But it was for my own amusement
Saying love was an illusion of a hopeless heart.
Of all of the things that she’s ever said
She goes and says something that knocks me dead.

You won’t find faith or hope down a telescope
You won’t find heart and soul in the stars
You can break everything down to chemicals
But you can’t explain a love like ours.

Ooohhhh
It’s the way we feel, yeah this is real.
Ooohhhh
It’s the way we feel, yeah this is real.

Of all of the things that she’s ever said
She goes and says something that just knocks me dead

You won’t find faith or hope down a telescope
You won’t find heart and soul in the stars
You can break everything down to chemicals
But you can’t explain a love like ours.

Ooohhhh
It’s the way we feel, yeah this is real
Ooohhhh
It’s the way we feel, yeah this is real

Love, a word that others define as an emotion of intense feelings, and for others a word with no meaning at all. People say love is everywhere, and it helps people mold a bond that holds their relationship together. In contrast to this, there are those who see love as something that does not exist,  or is something that needs further understanding for it to be considered true. Indeed there is a difference on how each individual defines and understands the meaning of love. An example may be evident in the song “Science and Faith” by The Script, wherein I believe that it clearly shows to us how much people differ on their understanding about love, and how this affects them and the people around them.

For me, I can imagine that the song revolves around a guy who narrates a certain experience in his life. I can see a scene where he and his girlfriend are starting to have more arguments about love, based on the lyrics found through out the song. This may be caused by the perspective and understanding of the man on the word or emotion love. With the lyrics “Tried to break love to a science, in an act of pure defiance, I broke her heart” and “But it was for my own amusement, saying love was an illusion of a hopeless heart”, I think that the man does not believe in love, and he tries to understand it based on scientific views. The girl, on the other hand, sees and understands love as an emotion that does not need a documented and scientific research. As a result of their different views, their relationship gets affected and starts to sink.

There are numbers of figures of speech that could also add to the definition or meaning of the song. The line “Having heavy conversations, about the furthest constellations of our souls.” may show a metaphor, where in the constellation of their souls could possible represent their relationship at present and in the future. A hyperbole may be seen in the line “She goes and says something that just knocks me dead”, because words could not literally kill someone in an instant, or for that situation it cannot be acceptable or real. He is trying to say how much his attention was caught, and how much the words of what his girlfriend said affected him and his beliefs. Other lines that could be better understood are “As i pulled apart her theories, as I watched her growing weary, I pulled her apart.” shows what he has done, how he started this situation and also how these actions affect her.

Based on this, we can see how personal views and understandings on anything, especially love, affects our relationship with those around us, mostly on those whom we share the emotion with. Luckily, guides are everywhere around us to help us choose and decide how we would understand its true meaning, and an example of these guides is the song Science and Faith. Love truly is a powerful emotion or word, and is something that goes beyond scientific explanation but can be simply understood by those who choose to love and accept it.
